I’m trying to give myself some extra runway while I work on scripts and character designs for the next couple of storylines, so I’m posting some old character art. I have something that’s probably way too big and ambitious planned, but oh well, we’ll see how it goes.

Today I’m sharing the first art I drew of Pikachu! The story behind this starts with me playing in a Digimon TCG tournament. There was a Pokémon tournament going on concurrently, and the store was giving away little paper Pikachu hats. One of my fellow Digimon homies found a random hat lying around and handed it to me. Naturally, I put it on. I was wearing a black dress, goth jewelry, and a spiky collar at the time, and when I looked in the mirror, I thought ‘Huh. Goth Pikachu is a pretty good look. Maybe I’ll make an OC about it.’ This was the result. She didn’t have a name or a backstory at this point, and her design is a lot different. It wasn’t until much later that I decided that this pikachu was Pikachu from Pokémon.

This was actually my first time using ink and colored pencil since I got my drawing tablet more than a decade ago. I had only just recently started filling sketchbook again, and I thought it would be fun to go the extra mile for Goth Pikachu, and draw her with more than just pencil. I used various different weights of black sharpie I had lying around the house, and a set of colored smencils I got as a birthday gift years ago. I have more ‘professional’ art supplies at my disposal, but I liked the idea of using cheap, simple, easy to transport art supplies to dip back into analog art.

And before I forget, Happy 9/11!!!
